NEONATAL rooting system – predictable 28–42 day cuttings – PharmaRosa®

Cutting and rooting (28–42 days)

“Time = quality”: disciplined process, stable hygiene, controlled parameters

PharmaRosa® NEONATAL only provides a stable basis for you if rooting is not a matter of “luck” but a planned, disciplined production process. The essence of the system: controlled mother stock, rapid processing, strict hygiene regime, and controlled climate and time parameters.

Quick summary Objective & risks Process overview Hygiene and cultivar handling Climate and time parameters Acclimatisation Typical mistakes Why is it an advantage?

In short – what is the essence of NEONATAL rooting?

  • Starting point: controlled, continuously inspected mother plant stock.
  • Processing: freshly harvested shoots are processed immediately – they are not stored for long.
  • Cutting type: single-leaflet, semi-hardwood cuttings – with controlled preparation and sticking.
  • Controlled rooting: predefined climate and time parameters (heat, humidity, light, air movement, water/nutrients).
  • Indicative timing: rooting typically takes 28–42 days, followed by acclimatisation and crop equalisation.
  • Scaling to 1,600 cultivars: enabled by stable hygiene and production control, not a narrow group of “easy-to-root” cultivars.
  • Own-root advantage: uniform, own-root starting point → more stable behaviour in your further growing.

Objective & risks

Objective

To produce uniform, healthy cuttings with a stable root system that can be integrated quickly and predictably into your growing technology (polytunnel / cold house / outdoor / field).

Typical risks (mitigated by process discipline)

  • Water loss and tissue stress during long storage → therefore: immediate processing.
  • Hygiene risk (cross-contamination, Botrytis) → therefore: discipline and disinfection at cultivar level.
  • Climate fluctuation → therefore: controlled parameters, stable leaf drying and air movement.
  • Variation between cultivars → therefore: standardised production programme and batch management.

Brief technological overview (production logic)

  1. Mother stock inspection: continuous scouting, discipline at cultivar level.
  2. Shoot harvesting: under controlled conditions, aiming for minimal stress and rapid processing.
  3. Hygienic collection and handling: strict tool and surface disinfection by cultivar.
  4. Processing: single-leaflet, semi-hardwood cuttings; sticking under controlled parameters.
  5. Controlled rooting: climate and time programme (heat, humidity, light, air movement, water/nutrients).
  6. Acclimatisation: gradual transition to the growing and shipping environment.
  7. Crop equalisation: required agronomic operations (pinching, equalisation) to secure a stable starting quality.

Hygiene and cultivar handling – why is this the bottleneck with 1,600 cultivars?

Large-scale, multi-cultivar propagation stands or falls on the stability of the hygiene regime and cultivar-level discipline. The NEONATAL production logic therefore manages cross-contamination risk at system level.

Principles

  • Tool and surface disinfection by cultivar – to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Hygienically operated storage units – under controlled environmental conditions.
  • Minimal storage time – freshly harvested shoots are processed immediately.
  • Batch-based thinking – cultivar × batch × date logic for traceability.

Note: the aim is not to “treat a lot”, but to design the system so that overall risk is lower from the outset.

Climate and time parameters – controlled rooting

Successful rooting does not depend on a single “trick”, but on keeping the parameters stable: temperature, humidity, light, air movement, water and nutrient supply. The aim is to keep the cutting’s water balance and physiological status optimal and to secure even root development.

Indicative duration

  • Rooting: on average 28–42 days (depending on cultivar and programme).
  • Afterwards: acclimatisation and crop equalisation (to support integration at your site).

Note: rooting time and dynamics depend on the cultivar and programme; stability is provided by controlled, disciplined production.

Acclimatisation – a “good root” alone is not enough

Rooted cuttings go through acclimatisation: we gradually adjust them to the further growing and shipping conditions. The goal is that in your system the plant can be integrated quickly and predictably into your own technology.

  • Gradual change: stepwise adjustment of climate and operations to the growing environment.
  • Crop equalisation: necessary interventions (e.g. pinching, equalisation) to secure batch uniformity.
  • Logistical preparation: supporting despatch quality and transportability.

Typical mistakes – useful to know also on your side

1) “Let it stand for a few more days” – the most common source of quality loss

Semi-finished material is highly time-sensitive. If it has to wait: keep it in a cool + bright place; dark storage should be avoided.

2) Humid environment with stagnant air

Persistent leaf wetness and poor air exchange build fungal pressure. Best practice: leaf drying plus gentle air exchange.

3) Overly wet, poorly aerated medium

The root zone needs oxygen. Overwatering and “silted” media cause instability.

Particularly useful on your side: Irrigation principles Substrate, pH, EC

Why is the NEONATAL rooting system an advantage for you?

  • Stable starting quality: you are not buying “rooting uncertainty”, but a finished, uniform starting material.
  • Better planning: the uniform tray system integrates more easily into batch planning and scheduling.
  • True-to-type cultivars and batch management: identifiable and traceable even with a large number of cultivars.
  • Own-root advantage: no rootstock–scion junction → simpler plant structure, lower technological risk in further growing.
